Summer 2007

July 23, 2007

Dear members and friends,
This letter serves to bring you up to date on the progress of our community boat shop and upcoming events.
Let me first invite you to join us at our annual Louse Point boat meet and picnic on Sunday August 5th between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. Bring a picnic and some to share with others, along with your boat and good friends. If you don't have an East Hampton beach parking sticker don't fret, the Town Board Resolution 2007-1036 lifted the parking restrictions for the day. This is an opportunity to sail and row a great variety of member's boats.

Our next event is Harborfest on September 15th and 16th. We will have our T-shirts for sale, boats on display, a classic boat race on Saturday afternoon while on Sunday a few of us will have the opportunity to crew aboard the Intrepid, an America's cup classic, in the third Charity Cup race. There are three crew positions available for those of our members who are willing to part with $1,000 for the experience. Last year we missed first place in the last few seconds of the race. It is truly an experience of a lifetime.

The final stages of the community boat shop are nearing thanks to the dedicated effort of a small group of volunteers. We are fortunate to have a number of fine craftsmen who contribute many hours to building key elements. Other volunteers have refined their construction skills where they no longer require monitoring.

Professional help will lay up the cedar shingles in the next week or so. Our focus over the next few weeks will be on plumbing, installing the lighting, and building the handrails for the porch and deck. Our last big push will be the erection of the posts and joists for the south facing porch and related laying of the deck.

Our volunteers arrive at 9 AM on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you have time either of these days we can use your help. It is very rewarding to work with other members as we undertake the final stages of construction. Bring a lunch and share in this experience. Your Skipper, Ray
P.S. The Susan Constant is commissioned and ready to be sailed along with our many rowing boats.

7/15/07    Annual Boat Meet & Picnic Update

August 5th is the annual Louse Point boat meet and picnic. It starts at 10 and goes on till 4 pm. We have parking and boat launching permit requirements lifted for our members for the day. It is a matter of bring your own picnic and some stuff to share. Ideally, everyone has an opportunity to sail and row a lot of different boats.

The next upcoming event is September 15th & 16th for the Sag Harborfest display, classic boat race and our participation in the Charity Cup.

We have several boats on display on Long Wharf for both days where we promote the society, sell t shirts etc. The Classic Boat Race is on Saturday afternoon where all classic boats are invited to participate in a rather informal race with a cup for the winner. This is always a highlight of the weekend!

The Charity Cup race is aboard 12 meter class boats that had previously raced in the America's Cup. We will be sailing aboard the Intrepid (US22) on Sunday. We have three slots available for anyone that wants to have the experience of a lifetime at a cost of $1,000 each. Ray will be the Captain of the crew as he was last year when we sailed on the Columbia and almost won the series. (The Intrepid is a faster boat.)

5/24/07
We will be sharing a table with Jim Ritter at the Whaling Museum on Sunday from 1 to 5 and Monday  from 10 to 3.  It is the beginning of Sag Harbor's 300th anniversary.   Come and help out for a few hours telling folks about our great new Boat Shop and forthcoming program.  We need a few people to cover for Monday.  I will be there on Sunday afternoon and would love to have you join me.

The boat shop needs more volunteers.  It looks like we have worn out a good number as few are showing up on weekend work days.  This Saturday we will start work at 9 and work well into the afternoon.  Bring a lunch.  We will complete the porch roof, do some electrical, prepare boards for the porch deck, and even nail on a few more shingles.  Even if you can come for only a few hours your presence will be greatly appreciated.

If you have ever dreamed about owning your own classic wooden Lightning class sailboat  one is now available for purchase.  It does need some work and is sitting on a substantial trailer ready to be hauled to your yard. It is Lightning # 9464.

5/13/07
We have serious work to do in order to have an operational boat shop by sometime this summer. We have lots of tasks to get done in the mean time. Such things as all the plumbing for the bathroom, completing the electrical wiring, lots of shingles to be nailed to the building and the completion of the porch roof. The porch roof is the highest priority item. We did half of it last weekend. Hopefully we will have a lot more done by the end of this weekend.

We will start work at 9 AM on Saturday and 10 AM on Sunday. Come either day or both. Bring a lunch and join the chat room on the topic of maritime adventures over the lunch hour. We have a good time, no one bosses you around and slowly we get the job done. You don't have to be an expert, we have many of them, just join a team and help out.

12/4/06

This Saturday, Dec. 9th, take a moment to come to our site between 11 and 1 to see what has transpired in the past week. We are having a modest reception celebrating the raising of the ridge pole and the hanging of the traditional evergreen to ward off demons and grant us fair sailing. Look for the photo depicting our progress after day one of the erection of our timber frame structure. Join us, Ray

 11/30/06

We have incredibly good news. Monday we will see the arrival of our timber fame. We have hired a fork lift for two weeks and a crane for Wednesday and Thursday of each week. The stress skin panels come the following Monday.

In order to be prepared we need to complete the installation of the framework for the porch. This will include nailing on the copper drip panels, inserting foam on the east side of the building for insulation, add joist hangers, and add the scrim boards. Not really a lot of work and many hands will help it go along with ease. If we are lucky we may even complete it all on Saturday. Dress warmly, the temperature will only get to the mid 40's. Start time is 9:30 AM.

The following weekend we will be able to begin to lay the deck of the porch with the locust decking material you have seen piled next to the catboat building. We have purchased our first real power tool, a 15" spiral head thickness planer. We have passed a few of the locust boards through it with outstanding results. The planed locust surface is a sight to behold. If you can't make it this weekend surely plan to be with us every weekend thereafter till Christmas. The windows are in and ready to be installed. We are so near to being a total building that Louis Mackall, our architect, wanted us to have our holiday dinner party in the boat shop instead of the American Hotel as we have planned. Your invitation is in the mail for a gathering on December 28th. Hope to see you at the site one of the upcoming weekends, Ray

Louse Point Gathering 2006

Classic Boat Fair at Mulford Farm East Hampton, NY 2006

Looking Back - Fall 2005

Harborfest and the Charity Cup were a big success this year. EECBS member Peter Reuss was the winner of the Sag Harbor Express Cup this year in his new Dark Harbor 17 1/2 (the boat that graces our newly designed t-shirt)!The much anticipated Atkins skiff raffle drew quite a good showing. 900 raffle tickets were sold but unfortunately there could be only one winner. The drawing took place late Sunday afternoon just outside the Breakwater Yacht Club. Many of the Vitelli food people were on hand (they were our sponsor for the Charity Cup race). One two year old daughter sitting on her father's shoulders pulled the tickets. Her father told her in Italian to dig deeply to pull the winning ticket. So with the proverbial drum roll a winner was announced. BARRY RICE was the lucky winner of the Atkins skiff. When told of his good fortune he was delighted but even more so as his son will now be the proud owner of this very well made boat. Barry and his family live on Lumber Lane in Bridgehampton. The entire weekend was a winner for us as an organization. The Atkins skiff was the main attraction at our booth on Long Wharf.  Supported by Jim Ritters recently restored Old Town tender, which looked spectacular, and Rob Barkers Dory skiff we had a nice showing for the public and drew many admiring eyes. Our members were on hand for the long hours each day answering questions and promoting the raffle. In addition to the 900 raffle tickets we sold nearly 100 t-shirts. In all we brought into our Community Boat Shop fund nearly $10,000.  Congratulations to all of our members who helped make this weekend a true winner.

The Louse Point Gathering on Saturday August 6th was enjoyed by 35 members, their friends and families. Not only was the weather perfect that day but in addition there were a dozen boats for members to experience and lots of good food to eat. Jim Ritter became the master of the grill while others sailed or rowed about the harbor.
